Window tinting the uk law

The law on window tints

LEGAL WINDOW TINT UK:

There are several important safety rules for tinted vehicle windows.

Find out the car window tinting rules and what is likely to happen if you break the legal car window tint laws.

Auto front side windows and vehicle front windscreen are all subject to glass tinting restrictions in the UK.

But, the rules of the car tinted windows law vary according to when the vehicle was first used.

Most vehicle manufacturers produce modern vehicles with a slight window tint. It gets added to the glasses as standard when they build the cars. Adding extra tint could mean the glass windows fail the legal requirement for window tinting in the UK.

The front windscreen and the two door windows either side of the driver must have the legal amount of tint. Having a vehicle with heavy tinted windows at the front is risking prosecution by the police.

There is no specific legal limit for tinting car windows on any of the rear passenger glass windows. Likewise, the car tinted windows law does not apply to the vehicle rear windscreen.

But, the legal car window tint UK laws for the front windshield and front side glasses have two variants.

All Vehicles First Used Before the 1st of April 1985

In this case the car front windscreen and both front side window glasses must all let through at least 70% of light.

Why Have Window Tint Regulations UK?

The reason why the police enforce the UK window tinting law is for road safety. Heavy or dark tinted car glass can impede driver visibility. The breach of auto window tinting rules may be a contributing factor for some road traffic accidents.

Drivers need to see where they are going especially at dawn and dusk. This is even more important when driving in adverse weather conditions. Dim window tints can restrict your ability to see the most vulnerable road users. These could include cyclists and pedestrians in low lighting areas.

How Do Cops Measure Window Tint?

Police and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) enforce car window tinting rules. In some cases you may get pulled over by the police for having over tinted car windows.

Their vehicle examiners use light measuring equipment to measure levels of window tint. They measure the level of light passing through the glass in the vehicle.

Penalty for Over Tinted Car Windows

What happens if your car windscreen or front side windows has illegal tinted windows? They are breaking the rules if they got tinted too much and you could then get:

  1. Served with a 'Prohibition Notice'. That could mean you must stop using your vehicle on the road until you have removed the extra window tints.
  2. A court summons or receive a penalty notice.

Selling a Vehicle with Illegal Tinted Windows UK

It is against to law to sell a vehicle with heavily-tinted front windows in the United Kingdom. The police or Trading Standards may prosecute you for selling a car with illegal glass tinting.

Note: Evaluating a car for legal tinted windows is not a standard part of the vehicle mot test.
